Now that you understand where herbs fit in healthcare and how to make and use herbal preparations, it is time to stock up on the most useful herbs for the home and family. Herbs for kids, adults and elders will be discussed and suggestions will be made for the best herbs for colds, flu, allergies, cuts, scrapes, pain, sleep stress and more. HERB GARDENING INTENSIVE

.Start thinking now of what herbs you would like to grow. We will cover all the how-tos and choices of herb gardening including culinary and medicinal herbs and how to prepare them for best flavor and/or therapeutic value. Design, conditions and  harvest and preservation will be discussed. Learn how to use herbs with confidence for cooking and health.  By special request, we will travel to a local nursery for an herb potting demonstration. Handouts and hands-on demonstrations will show you how to enjoy success with herbs!

This hands-on class series will cover herbal history and lore, herbal preparations, medicine kits, essential oils, botany, harvest and preservation, herbs and body systems, descriptions of carrier oils, Materia Medica and a trip to an herbal pharmacy and much more. We will answer the question, "Why use herbs?" and learn about their benefits. Special emphasis will be on herbs that are useful in a massage practice. We will make herbal preparations that you can use. Botanical therapies can enhance and prolong the beneficial effects of massage! Class credits are available. Thurs., 6-10 p.m./ Fri. and Sat., 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 a.m.

This is a spectacular herb walk! It is so gorgeous  this time of year and there are some very interesting herbs to see on our way up the trail.  Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, lunch, loop and herb books to identify some flowers and plants. Please be a bit flexible with the end time as we sometimes get so busy looking at plants, we don't want to have to scramble to wrap up.  For sure, we will be done by 3. p.m.
Attendees meet at the Summer Booth Parking area or Goldminer's Parking Area.  This information will be updated as the snow melts out. 
 We will carpool to our starting place which will be different than last year.

Ethnobotany is a recently developed field of study that combines anthropology and botany. It examines the way cultures use plants for food, medicine, ritual, and utilitarian purposes. This series of classes will follow the history of ethnobotany and the adventures of the intrepid explorers to the present day. Learn about the fascinating history of rubber,  the discovery and use of mind altering plants, and how plant constituents can be patented as pharmaceuticals. We will take a trip to the Natural History Museum at the University of Utah to see how an ancient culture made use of the plants that were available to them. If you like true stories of harrowing adventures and scientific and mystical discovery, you will love this class!

Join herbalist, Merry Lycett Harison, for an instructional day in the Wasatch mountains. We will set out to discover the herbs of the wild. Learn how to use cherry bark and what yarrow is good for and more. We will caravan in our vehicles on maintained dirt roads to visit different bioregions. Practical instruction and demonstrations will be givin on botany, collection, cultivation, harvest techniques, preparations, preservation, use and medicinal value. Bring lunch, loops, plant books, sunscreen and water. We will meet at the visitor's Center at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway, Utah. Carpool if you can. Register by July 1st .

Note: There is no plant collecting allowed in the park

    • Get off at Exit 146 (Hwy 40 to Heber).
    • Follow past Jordanelle Reservoir to the first light.

    • Take the right fork onto Burgi Lane (heading west)
    • Follow Burgi lane as it changes into Cari Lane
    • At the stop sign (at Homestead Dr.) turn right.
    • Follow this road as it curves to the left.
    • The visitor center is on your right.
