Ethnobotany is a recently developed field of study that
combines
anthropology and botany. It examines the way cultures use plants for
food, medicine, ritual, and utilitarian purposes. This series of
classes will follow the history of ethnobotany and the adventures of
the intrepid explorers to the present day. Learn about the fascinating
history of rubber, the discovery and use of mind altering plants,
and how plant constituents can be patented as pharmaceuticals. We will
take a trip to the Natural History Museum at the University of Utah to
see how an ancient culture made use of the plants that were available
to them. If you like true stories of harrowing adventures and
scientific and mystical discovery, you will love this class!
